K-pop is a term that is used for the South Korean Pop culture. During the early 1990s their culture saw a shift in the world of music that was so dramatic and had such an impact in the Eastern world that it was called the Korean Wave. Numerous leading artists emerged from this new musical era and ultimately the new genre grew in popularity throughout South Korea, Japan and other portions of the East.
During the beginnings of this music phenomenon several musical groups began to come to the forefront. Groups like Shinhwa, Wonder Girls and Super Junior began to create a new sound in music. Some of the leading groups began to gain international attention. Numerous of these bands became household names in South Korea. Well-liked bands like Seo Tai-Ji, Rain, Duex, BigBang, 2NE1 and BoA discovered great recognition in the newly defined globe of K-pop. BoA and Rain have had some measurable good results in the United States, but not the recognition they had hoped for. They have been booked in some of the top venues and performed to sell out crowds. Despite this measure of success they have not fared as well in the Western music world. But in spite of this disappointment, the international popularity of K-pop has continued to spread.
An additional South Korean artist to reach the United States billboard charts was Kim Bum Soo, ranking at 51 in 2001. The solo female artist, S. Blush ranked in at initial in 2006 and second in 2007.
