Many products that offer to trim down excess fats in a short span of time are being advertised in the market right now. There are many people who present their testimonies about the effectivity of some products but many of these products have not undergone thorough studies yet. One of the most controversial and harmful, are the use of alternative sugar supplements. Because of the high caloric content of sweet foods, many dieters settle on artificail sweeteners.
Agave syrup or nectar is one example. Agave syrup comes from agave plant and it is a common ingredient in making tequila. It is famous to Mexicans as "honey water" and is used as ingredients to many foods because it is 40 times sweeter than table sugar.
People now are getting more aware of the danger of other sugar alternative such as the High Fructose Corn Syrup(HFCS) so they settle to a much healthier alternatives. Dr. Joseph Mercola, HFCS is a form of sugar that is metabolized in the liver in the same way like alcohol and results to dangerous fats thus make a person obese and gain weight. Fructose in high amount may also spike uric acid level, and impair your appetite control mechanism.
Based on the research conducted by Dr. Mercola, this agave syrup is actually much worst than HFCS. He pointed out many reasons why dieters must avoid it. Here are some of the reasons he stated. Number one reason is that agave syrup contains the highest amount of fructose which is 70-97% unlike other commercial sweeteners that contain only 55% HFCS Second is the processing of agave syrup is the save as of cornstarch. It is highly processed and does not flow directly from the plant to the jar. Natural agave syrup is very expensive and it is available only in Mexico. Next is that agave syrup is highly concentrated so it is really addictive. Fourthly, it has no nutritional benefit because it has been stripped off by the processing. lastly is that agave syrup contains saponin which can be very dangerous for a pregnant woman and it is also associated with vomiting and diarrhea.
