This year London Wandsworth Artists’ Open House event, which is organised by Wandsworth Council's Arts team and an artists' steering committee, presents a unique opportunity for more than 200 artists to showcase and market their work. Doors will be open to more than 100 venues across the London borough on the first two weekends in October (1-2 Oct and 8-9 Oct).
There is a heady mix of creative talent on display, the Open House is a lively and enriching experience for exhibitors and visitors alike. This year's programme embraces a vast variety of mediums including craft, design, sculpture, painting, jewellery, drawing, film, installation and photography.
Extraordinary artists such as Bruno Seigle, Judy and Nicky Young, Stuart Brown, Brian Sharland... showcase an impressive array of contemporary fine art photography. It allows you to understand and appreciate the art they make in new and surprising ways. It can be a real magical mystery tour and with the fantastic range of artworks on show, you cannot fail to be engaged and delighted by the experience.
Many visitors buy their first piece of original artwork at an open house and return again year after year. Last year event attracted in the region of 8,000 visitors across the borough.
London Wandsworth Council's arts spokesman Councillor Jonathan Cook said: "This year's programme is the most ambitious yet and involves a record number of local artists. It's a fantastic opportunity to discover more about the borough's arts scene and to buy some original pieces direct from the artist. The sheer scale of the event demonstrates the wealth of creative activity taking place across the borough. I invite everyone to pick up a brochure and decide which artists they would like to visit.”
Open House dates: 1/2 October and 8/9 October 2011, 11 am – 6 pm
The event website includes an interactive map with the location of every open house. It allows art lovers to build their own trail, stopping off for a coffee or bite to eat along the way. For further announcement, click here.
In addition to the Open House weekends, Wandsworth council support the campaign for Drawing: The Big Draw. The Campaign for Drawing has one aim: to get everyone drawing!
Why? Drawing helps us to think, invent and communicate – regardless of age and ability.
The Big Draw
Held throughout October, The Big Draw is the Campaign's flagship programme and aims to bring communities together in creative ways. It is the largest drawing festival in the world.
More than 1000 venues take part annually, from national museums and heritage sites to rural nursery schools. They show how drawing can be used to connect visitors with their heritage, environment or each other. Schools often invite the wider community to share the pleasures of learning through drawing. Last year 22 countries joined the UK in organising events.
Big Draw is an yearly month-long festival of over 1,000 events across the UK. Every October, museums, galleries, heritage sites, libraries, schools and parks join in - inviting people of all ages to discover how drawing can bond them with their surroundings and the wider community.
